Evocation is the summoning of an energy/spirit outside of one's self
Invocation is taking the energy/spirit into one's self
Both are designed to suppress consciousness and stimulate the unconscious mind, allowing buried imagery and associations to step forward. All gods, devils, angels, demons, etc. are archetypal images embedded deeply within our unconsciousness. They are accessed and brought into consciousness through ritual practice. In essence, you are speaking to your inner Self when you communicate with any entity; they do not exist apart from yourself.
The more you know about the entity and its symbolism the better chance you have of communicating with it. In essence, you are speaking to your Inner Self when you communicate with any entity, they do not exist apart from yourself.
There is a school of thought from Carl Jung that exists what he termed the Collective Unconsciousness, and it is there that all these archetypal forms exist as thought-forms, egregores, etc., they are meme-like and become greater as they become popular (e.g. Abrahamic god), or diminish as they fall out of popularity (e.g. Sumerian gods). Neuroscience evidences that this Collective Unconscious is handed down genetically through our DNA structures.
None of these entities can do anything for or to you that you cannot do yourself, in fact the entire process of ritually summoning and communicating with an angel or demon is a form of Ritual Majiq, in that through communication you are seeking to create a change within your Self to create a change in your outer Self, eventually influencing your environment and producing the desired results.
In summary, the term "envocation" encompasses the dual process of
summoning spiritual energies into conscious awareness and projecting
their attributes into the objective universe. Through the focused Will and
Intent of the practitioner, this practice enables the manifestation of
desired changes in accordance with their Needs and Desires. It signifies
the conscious engagement with archetypal energies and the active role
of the individual in co-creating their reality.
